If we could stand in a limitless Yantian port,
what would we see?
In the familiar background of the country’s rapid industrial growth, Yantian developed from a village to one of the largest ports in China. In this time of change and upheaval, how does the individual comprehend the vast volumes of essential traffic passing through daily? In the mass-manufactured spaces of industry, does the individual see this landscape not as a transitory service space, but as a symbol of potential and transformation?
"Yantian and container", created by Paul Tse, Evelyn Ting and New Office Works(NOW), appeared in the City Of Streams, asking all visitors: If we could stand in a limitless Yantian port, what would we see?
In approaching this project, the team starting point was the raw fascination with the speed and scale of Shenzhen’s growth, which many of us have observed within our lifetimes from across the border. The most tangible part of this, at this site, was the flow of goods in the port of Shenzhen, crucial to the economy and the construction industry, which we represented quite literally with the most heavily traded commodities of grain, metals, cement, sand, oil, and coal. These contents, housed in small container-boxes, were placed in a container-like room with a mirrored interior finish, which we hoped would impart an impression of the industrial scale of international shipping. What is usually concealed, passing by in the background, is instead revealed and celebrated. Within this room, visitors are free to form their own understanding, and perhaps to draw parallels with the urbanism of industry.
The team's goal was to recreate an abstracted sense of ports and of industrial environments, and our container-like room was constructed in an honest fashion with steel section supports and plywood board. Lighting was to follow this aesthetic, and was arrayed in factory grid fashion following the gaps between containers, held by the same external steel supports as supported the walls.
Ports and industrial spaces around the city are perhaps dismissed as in service to the ends of production, growth and capital, and not seen on their own experiential terms. Drawing attention to the volume of goods passing through daily and their often mundane nature, however, we could explore the sublime effect these places might have on the individual, and the development of their meaning when related to a wider narrative, whether it is the loss of existing conditions and histories, or the creation of the new.
The goods are often unseen and ordinary but key to the sustenance of so much of modern life after their transformation into finished products, food or energy. Shenzhen itself is a place of constant change, and set within this place our hope is for the individual to find their own readings and orientate themselves in what can be a disorientating new environment.
